The music of the spheres: an image of Copernicus' heavens

A beautiful image of God's design for the heavenly spheres

Edward B. Davis, one of our authors in the just-released Christian History 119, “The Wonder of Creation,” sent us this image of the heavenly bodies as described in Copernicus’ theory. (It’s part of a series of beautiful hand-colored engravings of scientific phenomena published in Paris in 1761 by Claude Buy de Mornas, geographer to the French king. You can see the whole set here.) You can see the sun at the center and if you look closely, you can read the names of the orbits of the different planets—each with their moons.

Read more about Christian involvement in the rise of modern science in Dr. Davis’ article in issue 119, available now to read online or purchase, as well as in CH issue 76, “The Christian Face of the Scientific Revolution.”
