Bernard of Clairvaux, Selected Works. In the series: The Classics of Western Spirituality, Paulist Press, NY, 1987. This volume contains a very helpful introduction to Bernard (by Jean LeClercq)—possibly the best available. The new translations and the forward are by Gillian Evans; she is an Oxford—trained medieval scholar and has several scholarly books on medieval subjects, including:

The Mind of St Bernard of Clairvaux. In the series: Classics of Faith and Devotion, Multnomah Press, Portland, Oregon, 1983. A book designed for devotional reading and introduced by James M. Houston, a former lecturer at Oxford and Chancellor of Regent College. Also includes selections by Bernard’s friend William of St Thierry.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Bruno S James, Hodder & Stoughton, Lindon, 1957. A penetrating short biography.

The Love of Learning and the Desire for God. Jean LeClercq, Fordham University Press, 1961. An essential book about the history, purpose, and meaning of monastic life.
